We Achieve Healthy, Beautiful Smiles with Periodontal Disease Treatment
Periodontal disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. This condition occurs when oral infections destroy the teeth-supporting structures over time. Periodontal disease is destructive to oral health, whether in the early or advanced stages. Edmondson Family Dental Care diagnoses and treats gum disease before it causes permanent damage. What is gum disease?
Plaque (oral biofilm) is the main cause of periodontal disease. This sticky, colorless film forms when food debris mixes with harmful bacteria and saliva. When left to thrive, bacteria in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums, causing gum redness, tenderness, and swelling. If this infection is left to thrive, gingival tissues separate from the teeth, causing deep pockets to form. Over time, the infection attacks the teeth-supporting structures, causing loose teeth that eventually fall out.Â
How is gum disease diagnosed?
We diagnose periodontal disease by examining your symptoms and using a periodontal probe to measure the depth between your gums and teeth (sulcus). A healthy sulcus is no deeper than 3mm. If the readings are higher, it states the presence of gum disease, and higher readings indicate severe periodontal disease. When we suspect advanced gum disease, we’ll use digital X-rays to determine the extent of jawbone loss.
How do we treat gum disease?
The treatment choice depends on the extent of the disease. Treating mild gum disease (gingivitis) can often be as straightforward as performing routine cleanings and enhancing daily oral hygiene habits. Gingivitis is the only reversible stage of gum disease. However, moderate to severe gum disease is manageable to maintain optimal oral health.Â
Here are treatment options for advanced gum disease.
- Deep teeth cleaning: This non-surgical procedure uses scaling and root planing to remove etiological agents like plaque, tartar, and harmful bacteria from the deep periodontal pockets. Scaling targets unhealthy deposits below the gum line, along the root. Root planing smoothes the roots to promote healing and prevent harmful bacteria from recolonizing in the future.Â
- Gum grafting: When gum tissues are damaged, they can’t regenerate themselves. Gum grafting replenishes lost healthy tissues to maintain optimal periodontal health.
How can gum disease be prevented?
The best way to prevent gum disease is by maintaining good oral hygiene through regular brushing and flossing. While these habits help remove plaque, gum disease can still develop. That’s why you must see your dentist every six months for professional cleanings.
The other tips for gum disease prevention include:Â
- Eat a well-balanced diet and limit the intake of sugary foods
- Manage stress, diabetes, and other immune-suppressing conditions
- Quit smoking
- Manage teeth grinding and clenching (bruxism)
